folks are scary good. This is the band that made me sit up and notice that klezmer was changing, becoming something of this day and age. Periodically, as on the stunningly beautiful Romanian Fantasy, or even on the more straightforward bulgars that follow, the band reminds the listener that they know from traditional klez--how to play it, and how to give it life. But starting off the album with the rocking "Man in a Hat" (Canada's wonderful Moxy Früvous join in on this one!) the Klezmatics push and redefine Klez, as well.
What's also interesting is how much this is absolutely, unequivocably a klezmer album, as opposed to, say, band member Frank London's soundtrack for the movie, The Shvitz, which is klez-based, but, to my ears, no longer klez. Another thing I like is how they keep switching off with the Flying Bulgars of Toronto as "coolest, beyond traditional klezmer band." The winner? Well, for now, this takes the Flying Bulgar's "Agada" and raises the ante, ** as Agada built on "Rhythm + Jews." But either band in concert is phenomenal. [Whew! As I write this, their "Doina" on this new album is sending shivers up my spine. It's well, maybe a meta-doina? Doina as Nicky Hopkins might have played it if he had the patience to play slow and let the silence dance with the notes? And then, suddenly, with a shout, "Freyt Aykh, Yidlekh," [Get Happy, Jews] it's back to more traditional sounds for a bit

1993 • Syncoop 5753 CD 161

The only problem that I have with this album is that I've already heard the subsequent one, and, while I can hear in this many of the things that I loved about the first Di Gojim album that I heard, I also hear the things that would be more fully realized in the most recent fun sjtetl un sjtets.
The opening Boiberiker Drejlach reminds me very much of the opening to "Fun Sjtetl un Sjtets. It's a thoughtful medley that lets the band show its chops before proceeding to mere songs. Other songs on the album, such as the "Moldavische Suite" also demonstrate that thoughtful, instrumental side of the band. Naming a medley after Shalom Aleichem's imaginary town is a wonderful touch, as well, putting the mind into ** the right mood. At the same time, the band is ** as able as ever to joke through a weepy satire such as "Joske for Awek" and yet, showing how well they understand of what they are making fun, ends it perfectly with a melancholy Lubavitcher Nigun.
As is to be expected, the band has fun with some of my favorite standards, and does them well. In particular, "Zhankoye," (here called "Dshankoje", also sometimes called "The way to Sebastopol"), a paen to Jewish collectivization in Stalin's USSR (and a song a friend tends to introduce as "that song about forced Jewish labor under Stalin") is done quite credibly. It's one of my favorite songs. They also manage to have fun with "Ale Brider," something that gets harder every year since the Klezmatics brought it to our attention a few years ago. (In a rare slip, they go traditional on this version, forgetting to sing about "alle shvestern".) Instrumentally, they have fun with Tarras numbers such as a "Rumänische Nigunim" that might have seemed libertine to Tarras, but work here perfectly, and manage to bring Brandwein to life, as well, as in the "Vi bistu gewejsn far prohibition." Lest this sound like a reworking of historic materials, let me emphasize that this is very, very much an album of its time. It's that ability to take this material and make it fresh and exciting that typify the band.
All in all, this CD is yet another reason to approve of Di Gojim. And, as previous and subsequent recordings prove, you haven't heard nothing yet!

Ferenc Jávori Fegya: The Wedding Dance
klezmer-musical
Based on the play by Ottó Indig
Written by István Kállai és György Böhm
Lyrics by Tibor Miklós
Artistic director: Miklós Gábor Kerényi

Premiere of the world's very first klezmer musical in the Operetta Theatre!

The story is happening in a Romanian-Hungarian-Jewish village in Transylvania. András Bárány - the son of the rich farmer - has his bridegroom's farewell party, he is about to marry the poor but very pretty Rózsi Patkós. This bridegroom's farewell party seems to be too long, since as it turns out, Rózsi doesn't have the documents needed to be married. After her parents' death nothing is left, no house, no money, no documents about the girl /certificate of birth or baptism /. The girl is working in the farmstead and she lives there, too. The notary Cosma - following the advice of Mrs. Majzik, who knows about everything what happened in the last 50 years here in the settlement - turns to the orphanage in Kolozsvár to get some information. The answers from the orphanage puts light on the fact that Rózsi is not the daughter of the Patkós family, she was only adopted by them and they have risen her as their own daughter. Her real father is the late Salamon Blum, the owner of the mill, and her mother is the seduced maid-of-all-work, Regina Weisz, who died after the birth very soon. The "corpus delicti" was given to the children's home secretly.
So it turns out, that Rózsi, who was believed to be a **istian, is a Jew! And she doesn't have the slightest idea what it is! She went to church as a faithful Catholic, she has made confession, and Communion and if she had a problem she turned to St. Anthony for help. András Bárány had a shock when hearing the terrible turn. It is not enough that her bride is a foundling but she is a Blum descendant, too! He feels he has to disappear, he has to run away! He joins the army against his father's protest.
Rózsi defends herself in vain saying that "Not everybody is lucky enough to be born into a family of his or her choice", her present company, acquaintances, friends reject her. The Jewish innkeeper of the village, uncle Herskovics with some philosophical inclination, takes the desperate Rózsi into protection. He gives her home - and in his own way- he begins to teach her to her new faith.
The wife of Salamon Blum gets very upset at the fist time, when the fickleness of her late husband turns out, but later she gets curious to learn Rózsi. She always wanted to have a child and this person out of law is a Blum descendant ... After all, Herskovics has used to court Mrs. Blum, as well, but the woman - who knows why? - has chosen the rich owner of the mill. Mrs. Blum get to like Rózsi and would like to rise her up as her own daughter. She wants to take her into wealth, into the Jewish community. But she is not accepted there either, she is expelled from there, too, she is none one of them, "the essentially still **istian person" according them...

2003

The first Frank London album I heard was his soundtrack to the movie "the Shvitz". It was one of the most interesting Jewish albums of that year. This year, his soundtrack to "Divan" may win a similar honor. The movie is an autobiographical story about filmmaker Pearl Gluck's attempt to retrieve a divan, on which slept a hassidic master, from Satmar, Hungary. To complement the movie, London has fashioned a soundtrack that fuses traditional Hasidic chant with a catholic selection of new sounds.
I haven't seen the movie, so I can't place music to visualization. Instead, I have to listen to the music on its own terms. The CD opens with Kol Isha, an eponymously-named gathering of women's voices. Gradually, London's "Shekhina" group fills in behind the voices. Hasidic New Wave provides some lovely horn-backed Jewish jazz-rock on "The Deal". All of these pieces reflect the hasidic nign-tinged theme.
Although I can tell differences in the type of music they play, there is no personnel difference between Hasidic New Wave and Shekhina on this recording. On the other hand, the use of Kol Isha's voices, a capella, or with Shekhina, is wonderful, and contrasts perfectly with the Brass Band part of the soundtrack. In fact, the section with the Brass Band and Kol Isha is one of my favorites. But then, the contrast between the ebullient, relatively traditional Brass Band on "Black Hats on Parade" contrasted with the equally ebullient, but less traditional Shekhina version of "Black Hats on Acid" is equally lovely. The end result is a wonderful amalgam of very traditional Jewish music pushing the edges. This is a delight with which to fill the ears. It's a Frank London sampler for 2003 (minus the Klezmatics, of course).
Now, I must see the movie.

Klezmer Alliance:

Цитата
Efim Chorny (Kishinev, Moldova) is the intense and charismatic singer of the KLEZMER ALLIANCE. His presence on stage and spontaneous humour are indescribable and must be heard and seen to be believed. Chorny’s original compositions are fresh but also lend themselves convincingly to the klezmer traditions of several generations past. This is how they have understandably and deservedly become loved and hailed on the 21st century Klezmer scene.

The KLEZMER ALLIANCE has gathered together some of Europe’s finest musicians in the Klezmer-Jewish Music field from London, Kishinev and Cologne: Efim Chorny (vocals), Susan Ghergus (piano), Berl Spehl (clarinets, recorder), Thomas Fritze (double bass), Andreas Schmitges (guitar/mandolin/dance) and Guy Schalom (drums) work successfully as a team creating new sound dimensions for Yiddish music.

The fiery KLEZMER ALLIANCE will intoxicate you and tickle your hearts and bones! Audience participation of the Yiddish dances will be lead by Andreas Schmitges and this is guaranteed to make the concert the best party you have had in a long time!

Понедельник, 17 Декабря 2007, 2:30 Yale Strom - Garden of Yidn (1998)

With heartfelt sincerity and a deep reverence, New York Jewish musician/artist Yale Strom has created Garden Of Yidn ('Yidn' meaning Jews in Yiddish), a remarkable and researched journey into the roots of European Jewish songs.
More than ** klezmer, this collection focuses on the near-forgotten as well as beloved melodies of Yiddish and Ladino vocal music. From its Middle-Eastern modalities, Gypsy (Rom) influences, and Romanian and Russian melodies, Strom presents a reflection of Yiddish history and traditions so real and true, the music isn't ** revived. It comes alive!
Taking a collection of familiar East-European Jewish songs, including such favorites as 'Moscow Nights', Strom gives unusual arrangements to each composition to expand its musical form, as well as creates new, original pieces that hark back to this fascinating genre. Garden Of Yidn interprets the rich musical forms of Jewish traditional songs in exciting new ways.
Recorded in both San Diego and New York, Strom has made the CD a showcase for the expressive voice of Elizabeth Schwartz who is also his wife. Featuring the performances of musicians in two different bands led by Strom, the bi-coastal project **s Klazzj in California and the New York-based Hot Pstromi. Other guest artists ** Damian Draghici who plays nai (panflute) on 'Doina Tirgu Frumos'. He is considered the preeminent panflutist in the world. Also, renowned jazz artist Bud Burridge plays the flugelhorn on 'Moscow Nights'.
Drawing his material from East-European Yiddish music, Garden of Yidn **s melodies researched from Polish popular songs, Czarist Russia, Turkish melodies in Ladino (Judeo-Espanol) lyrics and various other European countries including Romania and Latvia. There are also compositions based from Strom's symphony, Aliyot. The result is a fascinating and historic perspective of Jewish culture across the old world.
But then, the thorough and exhaustive work is not surprising, considering violinist Yale Strom's resume. A filmmaker, musician, writer, photographer, and composer, the New York-based Strom has done extensive research and work among the Jews and Gypsies (Rom) of Central and Eastern Europe since 1981. With his backpack, cameras, and violin, he trekked to remote parts of Europe and lived with his informants to get a first hand look at those survivors reconstructing their lives after World War II. So far, he has produced three documentary films, several photo-documentary books and leads two klezmer groups - Klazzj in San Diego and Hot Pstromi in New York - for which he has released a number of CDs. Garden Of Yidn is his first CD for the World Music division of the internationally recognized budget label, Naxos.
Singer Elizabeth Schwartz possesses a raw and powerful voice that has become a favorite among fans and fellow klezmer musicians for its unusually dusky timbre. Despite early training in musical theatre, Schwartz has always been more interested in American blues, rock and roll, and jazz vocalese. All of these influences can be heard in her interpretation and phrasing, while at the same time retaining the inherently traditional nature of the music. Strom might have been a mentor to her in the klezmer Yiddish genre, but, as Strom readily admits, "her astute interpretation and emotionalism comes from her soul."
With Garden Of Yidn, fiddler Yale Strom transports the listener back to a remarkable era of Jewish culture. It's a trip into the traditional and one that also pushes into the future. Come on into the garden.

Reviews, etc:

Don Byron / plays the music of Mickey Katz

So, can a black musician have Jewish soul? I mean, sure some Jews can play jazz (Benny Goodman!), but can blacks play klez? At least in this case, the answer is an unequivocal yes. Byron first came to the notice of klezmer fans as the lead clarinet player for Boston's wonderful Klezmer Conservatory Band. He is also known as a habitue of New York's Knitting Factory--home of interesting jazz and a well-known John Zorn hangout. (The Klezmatics hang there, too.)

I'll cut right to the review. This is the album that Mickey Katz would have made if he were around today. Byron clearly understands Katz, his music, where he was coming from--the ganze megillah. Byron is also an incredible musician, so there are wonderful breaks of pure klezzified jazz on this album. And the fun--if the Litvak Square Dance doesn't get you, try to escape the "Mechaye War Chant" without thinking of Cab Calloway or that "Chinese" blues oddity, "Hong Kong." If I were to introduce someone today to Mickey Katz' work, I'd point them at this album, rather than to Katz rereleases, as the better starting point.

Byron on Mickey Katz
(quotes from the CD booklet)

... [He] dived headlong into the chasm between America's immigrant population and a social order that held--and still holds--WASP-iness as its highest value.

... Mickey was a departure from earlier Yiddish entertainers and klezmer traditionalists. His lyrics contained few sentimental references to a romanticized "old country," but instead reflected ocntemporary Jewish-American life. His songs portrayed people who were in touch with both ethnic traditions and the consistently changing array of people, cultures and information that was, and is, America....

Don Byron

(born November 8, 1958) is a composer, jazz clarinet, bass clarinet and saxophone player. While he is considered a jazz musician, he is stylistically very adventurous, having recorded klezmer music, German lieder, cartoon music, a Jimi Hendrix song, and a track with rapper Biz Markie.

Early life

Byron was born in the Bronx, in New York City, and was raised by his parents who were themselves musicians, his mother a pianist, his father a bass player for calypso bands. His parents raised him listening to all kinds of music, taking him on trips to the ballet and the symphony, and also exposing him to jazz music such as Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis records.

Byron studied music at the New England Conservatory in Boston. He is a gifted performer on clarinet and (occasionally) saxophone, but on many of his albums subordinates his own playing to the e***oration of a particular style. Byron is one of jazz's greatest practicing historians, and some of his most successful albums (such as Plays the Music of Mickey Katz, Bug Music, and Ivey-Divey) have been recreations (in spirit) of forgotten moments in the history of popular music. Byron has been nominated for a Grammy award for his bass clarinet solo on "I Want to Be Happy" from Ivey-Divey...

Loneliness, loss, displacement, and death loom large among the topics covered in the 15 Yiddish poems set to melodies by popular Israeli folksinger Chava Alberstein, and arranged by New York's e***oratory Klezmatics, on this deeply sad and beautiful album. Anyone familiar with the Klezmatics' more rambunctious side will be impressed by the inventive delicacy and subtlety they bring to these elegant vestiges of fading Yiddish culture, virtually reanimating it with tangos, Hasidic melodies, polkas, and festive freylekhs that recall its vibrant past. Alberstein's low voice meshes beautifully with Lorin Sklamberg's high tenor, adding extra emotional resonance to a series of poems in the middle of the album that evoke the genocide twilight that enveloped the writers' world half a century ago. Their tragedy is redeemed in The Well. --Richard Gehr

I have long been a fan of Chava Alberstein. And who does not love the music of the Klezmatics?? Combine the two, one vocalist with a voice like honey, and one band, which gives new meaning to the word superlative, and you get "The Well," a glorious CD of new Yiddish poems set to extraordinary music. Too many adjectives here? Well, when you listen to "The Well" I am sure you will agree with my praise..."

On Rise Up!, The Klezmatics once again expand the concept of klezmer music by fusing the radical and the traditional via edgy jazz musicianship, interesting arrangements of traditional Jewish folk songs and Eastern European rhythms, and myriad other imaginative influences. Created in response to the 9/11 attacks, the album is an often somber meditation of loss in songs about deathbed regrets, lost love, and the dangers of vanity and complacency. While the band is typically best known for its ecstatic moments of musical celebration, even the instrumentals here have a subdued tone to them. The album is more reaffirming on its two versions (one in English and one in Yiddish) of Holly Near’s "I Ain’t Afraid": the message is a powerful indictment on religious fanaticism set to an uplifting gospel arrangement. Even though they didn’t write it, the song crystallizes the social and musical slant of The Klezmatics, a band with a message that preaches in its own unique style from its own very unique musical perspective. --Tad Hendrickson

Review: allmusic.com

One of the great things about klezmer is the fact that while it is a product of Jewish musical traditions, it has also reflected the Jewish-American experience. When American Jews in Brooklyn and Queens were digging Artie Shaw's clarinet in the 1940s and '50s, you'd hear it in klezmer recordings. The Klezmatics' Rhythm & Jews is a lively, energetic date that reflects Jewish tastes in both "the old country" and in the U.S. While many of the songs are traditional (including "Di Sapozhkelekh," "Violina Doyna," and the Hasidic "Shnirele, Perele"), the Klezmatics provide arrangements of their own and — like jazz artists — aren't afraid to take liberties and do some interpreting. Jazz is an obvious influence on the Klezmatics, who have very spirited improvisers in clarinetist David Krakauer and trumpeter Frank London (who shows some Miles Davis influence on "Fun Tashlikh"). This disc boasts some consistently invigorating music, as well as an amusing title.
